The demolition of a motel in Aberdeen in underway.

It is the first step of achieving the Main Street Association's vision for the site.

Crews are taking down an historic aberdeen hotel.

The project is making way for something new that developers say may benefit the entire area.

Main street manager ann tackett said aberdeen main street now owns this property, and as you can tell, it's having an extreme makeover.

Nat pop: "it was a real source of problems for aberdeen, so we are in the process of demolishing it."

Tacket explained this is the site of aberdeen's historic parkway hotel.

The tombigbee motel was built right on the side of it.

Now, she said through donations, the main street association bought the property from its previous owner, and is in the process of tearing the building down.

"it's just a real corporation for, the whole city of aberdeen is into this because it's going to be such an improvement for our town and for our main street."

Standup: "all of these motel rooms out here are gonna be demolished, but she said the demolition stops in this building right here.

Teams are gonna come in here and build this up, she said."

Tackett predicted the demolition should be finished by no later than wednesday morning.

She said the pandemic has not had a significant impact on this project.

"no, what was here was worse than covid, so i'm sure we're in good shape."

According to tackett, people and organizations involved in this project include chris chain out of columbus, eutaw construction, and a trucking organization hauling off the rubble.

"we want to sell this hotel to an investor that would restore the hotel and it would give us a good place for people to stay in aberdeen."

Tackett explained the hotel comes with a one million dollar tax credit from the i-r-s.

Finally, in addition to opening up the view for the churches and buildings around the site, she explained her team plans to have four new apartments in the top of the hotel, a 5-star dining facility, and a new coffee shop inside.

"we're gonna do whatever it takes to get this project completed."

Tackett said the generous people from aberdeen and other places who donated have made this project possible.

As far as completing it, she said her team may be able to have it finished within the next three years.
