The AMG versions of the competent A-CIass have always been a hoot. The A35 may sound like an old Austin but believe us, with 302bhp, it really flies, and it’s wonderfully rewarding to drive fast. To top it off, it has a lovely interior with all the gadgets that you could want.

Okay, so this may have four-wheel drive and a turbocharged four-pot, not the rear-wheel drive and stunning straight six of the old M140i, but it’s still great fun to drive and decently quick. You’ll enjoy a strong engine, a great driving position and a nicely balanced chassis.

The long-time king of the class, the Civic Type R absolutely nails the hot hatch brief. It is fast, handles brilliantly and yet is surprisingly comfortable and easy to live with. It’s sweetly balanced right up to its very high cornering limits. Spacious, too.
