ROUGH CUT.

NO REPORTER NARRATION.

British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt was in Paris to meet his French counterpart on Tuesday (February 12) as the clock ticks down to Brexit day and Britain tries to win concessions from the EU over the Irish "backstop".

Critics in Britain say the insurance policy to avoid a hard border being erected between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland could leave the country subject to EU laws for years after Brexit.

The EU says the backstop is vital to avoiding the return of border controls in Ireland and has refused to reopen the Brexit divorce deal, though Prime Minister Theresa May insists she can get legally binding changes to replace the most contentious parts of the backstop.
