A group of German and Spanish lawmakers urged on Monday (April 15) that EU governments protect Julian Assange against possible extradition to the United States.

Sevim Dagdelen and Heike Hansel, both of Germany's Left Party were joined by Spanish Green party Member of the European parliament Ana Miranda at a makeshift news conference outside London's HMP Belmarsh prison, where the WikiLeaks founder is being held following his arrest.

London police dragged Assange out of the Ecuadorian embassy on Thursday (April 11) after his seven-year asylum was revoked, paving the way for his extradition to the United States for one of the biggest ever leaks of classified information.

Assange's relationship with his hosts collapsed after they accused him of leaking information about the personal life of Ecuador's president, Lenรญn Moreno.

Supporters of Assange said Ecuador had betrayed him at the behest of Washington, that the ending of his asylum was illegal and that it marked a dark moment for press freedom.
