Crowds Dance in Street After Opposition Wins Istanbul Mayoral Election

Turkey’s ruling party lost control of Istanbul on June 23 after the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate Ekrem Imamoglu won 54 percent of the vote in the city’s mayoral election with nearly all ballots counted, local media reported.

The election was a re-run after Imamoglu’s March victory was annulled following complaints from the ruling AK party about alleged irregularities.

His opponent, former prime minister Binali Yildirim, conceded, Daily Sabah reported.

This footage, shared by Twitter user @AAksumuhammet, shows people dancing on the street in celebration of Imamoglu’s victory on Sunday.
