"Fleabag," "Schitt's Creek" break into Emmy nominations

While HBO and "Game of Thrones" dominated Tuesday's Emmy nominations, newer offbeat shows like "Fleabag" and "Schitt's Creek" also made the list of elite contenders.

Another record shattered for “Games of Thrones.” The HBO drama – which already has more Emmy wins than any other primetime series, with 47 – on Tuesday earned another 32 NOMINATIONS, blowing past the previous record for a drama set by “NYPD Blue.” HBO too broke a single-season nomination record with 137 – that’s 11 more than the previous record, held by… HBO.

The cable network regained dominance over Netflix, topping the streamer’s total nominations by 20.

But most impressive could be Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’s nomination for "Veep." She’s already won six times – the most for a performer in a single role – and has taken home eight Emmys overall.

One more and she’ll have the most wins ever for an actor.

"When They See Us," Netflix’s film about the Central Park jogger case, is in what could be this year’s most competitive category – Limited Series… up against Showtime’s "Escape at Dannemora" – about an upstate New York prison break - and HBO’s "Chernobyl," which painstakingly recreates the Russian nuclear disaster.

And if you think you hear lots of swearing, it’s due to this year’s surprise entry of "Schitt’s Creek." The comedy, which airs on Pop TV, reunites SCTV stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara – both of whom are nominated.

Three British contenders include the popular comedy “Fleabag,” the suspenseful “Killing Eve” and the police drama “Bodyguard.” Finally, the notable snubs, as in no Julia Roberts for the Amazon drama “Homecoming,” no George Clooney for Hulu’s “Catch-22,” and no “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon – who was shut out for a third consecutive year.
