U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he is considering billions of dollars in foreign aid cuts and would decide on the proposal - which faces strong opposition in Congress - within days.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he's still considering dramatic cuts to U.S. foreign aid, despite howls from Congress and warnings from top aides that the move could damage national security.

Administration officials said Trump's Office of Management and Budget is looking to slash more than $4 billion in foreign aid.

And we'll let you know over the next, probably, sooner than a week." The potential cuts would target funds controlled by the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, including programs in Pakistan and Central America.

Sources tell Reuters behind the scenes Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been pushing strongly AGAINST the deep cuts, with acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney lobbying in favor.

Media reports on Tuesday suggested the aid cuts might wind up being far less than $4 billion, but Trump did not confirm that.

Trump is also facing fierce opposition from lawmakers in Congress on both sides of the aisle.

His own close ally, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, says the plan would undercut a bipartisan budget deal Trump struck with lawmakers and signed into law just two weeks ago.
