China begins countdown to its 70th anniversary celebrations

BEIJING — Beijing is preparing to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China by holding a fireworks show and a massive military parade on Oct 1.

To prepare for the celebrations, Beijing has stopped several coal plants and construction sites from operating in order to ensure blue skies, while Chinese national flags have been set up on every corner of the city.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will address the public by giving a speech expected to celebrate China's economic growth, BBC News reports.

The national day parade will take place around Tiananmen Square amid heavy security.

Only those invited will be allowed to attend.

China has banned any low-flying aerial vehicles such as light aircraft, drones, balloons and even racing pigeons from flying in the area on the day of the celebration.

Passengers on trains and vehicles heading to Beijing are already facing multiple safety checks ahead of the anniversary.

According to the BBC, Chinese social media platforms like Weibo have said that they are deleting content that "insults" or "distorts" the nation's history in a bid to tighten online control.
