A eugene man will spend 20 years in prison for killing a stranger... when he was high on meth.

34 year old david duran pleaded guilty to manslaughter last month.

Kezi 9 news reporter michael sevren was the only reporter in the courtroom today and spoke to the victim's family who says the'yll never be whole again.

A man's who life was cut short by a complete stranger, 34-year-old david duran.

Sot: he had so much life in him he was a musician, i called a world class noise maker, he could pick up anything and make interments and sang.

On june 30th 2018, prosecutor erik hasslemen says duran tried to kick down the door of rivers' home on the corner of 13th and washington.

He says when rivers tried to stop him, he stabbed him.

Duran was later was found in a nearby backyard and shot by police.

His attorney says he was high on meth and has no memory of what happened.

Sot: i just want to express my deepest apologies.

Stand up karla tells me their family is relieved that this court process is now over.

She they now have a tiny amount of comfort knowing that to duran has taken some responsibility for his actions.

Sot: but nothing can erase the unimaginable heartbreak that he has caused to our family and our friends.

Duran will not be eligible for early release and will also have to pay nearly 5 thousand dollars in restitution.
