One Monticello woman is doing what she can to help the people of Indiana during the COVID-19 outbreak.

As they can.

You've heard the phrase hoosiers helping hoosiers.

One monticello woman is doing what she can to help the people of indiana during the covid-19 outbreak.

She's sewing masks to help put people at ease.

I chatted with tammy merkel through a video call to hear why she does this and see ehr process.

Nats of sewing machine sot: it's simple.

It's not real hard.

Anyone can do it.

Jb it takes a sewing machine, sot: 2 pieces because you want it to be 2 ply jb 2 piece of cotton and an elastic band.

Jb q: why are you making these masks?

Sot because i was worried about health care workers.

I have friends that are nurses and you know they are running short nation wide.

Nats jb: nation wide... hospitals are seeing a slash in the supply of n95 masks.

Tammy merkel has a great suggestion though.

Sot: i'd like to see them used for senior who need to go out.

Jb: the cloth masks are not ideal but they could be used by medical workers.

Iu health and franciscan health released statements tuesday.

Iu health says "it is up to supply chain.

I have suggested to the calls that have come directly to me to reach out to nursing homes and home care companies.

Franciscan says "we're developing criteria for what we need, and want to be respectful of peoples' time and resources."

Sot: i actually started sewing masks before even i got to that group.

Standup: the group was on facebook...greater lafayette sewing masks.

Created to organize seamsters, stichers and maskers.

Masking for those in need.

Sot: you want to make a whole bunch but it is hard to stop (laughs) jb: merkel works a full time job but has already found herself with 30 new masks nats "this is probably one of my favorites.

This is a peace sign."

Jb: more than 20 hours spent sewing this week.

Sot: people offer to buy them but they are not for sale.

One of the things i want to push on that.

People are making these but this is out of the goodness of their own heart.gooe wants to leave with the community/ sot: "just want everyone to know and remember.

Do what you can stay calm and be humble and kind.

I think that is important."

Merkle says she has been giving the masks to her friends with auto immune disorders.

She says she'll keep sewing them during the covid-19 outbreak.
