Considerable changes...especia lly animal shelters.

Volunteers have to do what they can to keep their staff and animals safe.

News channel 2's brent kearney visited the susquehanna spca to learn more about their new procedures.

"so we've been amping up our protocols but really its something we've been doing all the time."

For the susquehanna spca, covid 19 has brought numerous challenges to the shelter.

Executive director stacie haynes said they starting preparing by ordering additional cleaning supplies.

.

None .

None "so in the beginning of march we kind of projected what was going to happen.

So we ordered enough for like 6 months.

It might not last us 6 months because we are doing more so than what we did in the past so now we are sparying down door handles, tables, chairs."

The shelter uses this pet friendly sanitzer called rescue.

But they've also restricted guest access to appointment only.

Despite the restrictions, haynes says adoption numbers are increasing.

"all of our appointments are full.

We have animals in need that we are able to help.animals that are up for adoption are getting adopted so it just worked out really well."

Social distancing has also forced the shelter to make changes to staff.

"so we did have a few people that volunteered to be laid off for the time being.

Because we knew that it would be difficult to find things for them to do at home.

So other people are working from home.

They're maybe coming in once a week to grab things but again when people come in, we try and make sure that there's no one else here."

Haynes says their biggest need now is donations.

""we know people arent looking for ways to spend money at this point, but when you donate to an animal shelter, you're donating to animals that are in need.

Because folks are becoming homeless folks are becoming sick.

And we are that safety net to help them take care of their animals so we really do need donations at this time."

"and if you would like to learn more about how you can donate we will have a link to our website at wktv.com in cooperstown brent kearney news channel 2."
