Iowa governor kim reynolds is keeping schools closed for the rest of the year.

Governor reynolds says she doesn't thing there's enough turnaround time to open things up safely.

Reynolds also added that all spring sports in the state are canceled.

Iowa schools will not reopen for this school year, but school districts will be required to continue to provide continuous learning opportunities for their students until the end of the regular school year.

Reynolds says she will make an announcement about summer sports on june kimt news 3's nick kruszalnicki is live in mason city learning about the new requirments in place for iowa students now that they won't be in a classroom.

Nick what are you learning?

That's right amy?

The governor made the announcement during her daily press conference this morning.

It looks like the schools will remain locked up across iowa.

The ones most impacted by the closure will the students.

Those who are coming back to school in the fall might have to start earlier in the summer.

Meanwhile, seniors are wondering how they are going to earn their grades, in order to attend college.

Earlier i spoke with mason city high school senior matilda lee about how it will impact her plans for i don't know how much it's going to totally impact it.

If this virus keeps going on into the fall, i don't know what's going to happen with school or going to school.

If it's just going to be all online classes because i know they are already talking about postponing school in the fall.

School districts across the state are expected to come up with a 'return to learn' plan for reopening schools for the next academic year.

They have until july first to put those plans together.

Live in mason cit?

Thanks nick.

Schools will also have to cancel spring sports.

The state department of education will release more information about summer sports on june first.

Mayo clinic is on the frontline of the fight against covi?

19.

That doesn't just include treating patients who have the virus?

But also?

Groundbreakin g research that will help stop the spread.

Kimt news three's raquel hellman talked with the chair of mayo clinic's covi?19 research task force.

Live she joins us live in rochester?

Raquel?

What kind of research is being done?xxx katie?

I can tell you that almost anything you can imagine about covi?19 research is being done right here at mayo clinic.

That includes everything from basic science experiments studying how the virus affects cells?

To studies on different ways to decontaminate surfaces that may have the virus on it.

But what you may find more interesting now is the clinical trials.

When i talked with doctor andrew badley?

The chair of mayo's covi?19 research task force?

He explained that the clinical trials involve a variety of drugs that target the virus and prevent it from replicating.

There are also a variety of therapies that alter the immune response to the virus?

And hopefully prevent people from getting critically ill.

He says this is a very promising step in the fight against covi?19.xxx within a period of weeks, we have gone from no potential therapies for covid to some pretty exciting potential therapies.

He tells me that he believes within a period of weeks to months?

They'll find medications and therapies that are effective in treating the virus.

Live in rochester raquel thanks raquel.

Additionally, researchers are continuing to study samples of the virus with the hopes of learning as much as possible about the disease./// stormteam 3 i'm joined now by kimt stormteam three meteorologist sean macaday.
