Chico's ban on homeless camp evictions

Chico's Homeless Solutions Coordinator Joy Amaro said health and safety is the main goal.

The chico city council passed an ordinance placing a short- term ban on homeless camp evictions.

Kristian how is the program going??

I spoke to city leaders and they tell me they know people are upset but they are simply following c-d-c guidelines.

The c-d-c's website says unless individual housing units are available, encampments should't be cleared during the coronavirus outbreak to allow people to shelter in place.

The guidelines say the tents should be at least 12 feet by 12 feet per person.

Chico's homeless solutions coordinator, joy amaro tells me health and safety is their main goal.

She says they have groups of volunteers helping to haul away trash and educate people on covid-19.

But not everyone is sold on the program.

The majority of the people i talk to and the majority of people are upset, maybe theres another solution out there i haven't heard it but if there is maybe we could go over that but yes a lot of people are upset with this happening.

Joe crotts: there's probably no good solution given the circumstances, what we have is what we have and we have to deal with it and we got to deal with it in a humane manner.

Another woman told me she agrees with the city's decision to allow homeless to shelter in tents during the pandemic if they have no where else to go.

The city of chico says they are also placing hand washing stations, signage and portable bathrooms around town for people who need them.

City officials say things are changing constantly so they continue adjusting to make sure they are following c- d-c guidelines to protect the community.
