CNY Hackathon happening Saturday, but Online

The CNY Hackathon, previously held at area colleges, is being held online Saturday due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

All day saturday, over 60 students from colleges including mvcc, suny poly, utica college, and others will be given virtual operating systems that have a number of vulnerabilities in them.

Their job is to take those virtual operating systems, change passwords, close obvious holes in the operating systems, and try to lockout the industry professionals.

The dean of the school of stem from mvcc says there was hope the event could be online at some point in the future...and the future is now.

"we've been working towards making sure everything can be done online for a number of years now, and using the popular gaming platform discord for all of our communications has made it really easy for us to support the event online and for all of the students to interact online so it is very close to being an in person event even though we're all social distancing and working from our homes."

This is the seventh year for the event, the first online.

It runs from 9:00am-4:00pm.
