C1 3 or two about school..both mom and dad work at frederick douglass.

She gives us a look at the new normal.

C1 3 ### "ariea:because the world has stopped, learning does not."

School is a big part of life in the king family...and it was...well before this pandemic.

Ariea king teaches classes that help kids transition to college or a career...and his wife is the registrar...both at frederick douglass high school.

Casey"i miss the kids i miss seeing them so much.

And that is really been kind of the general consensus with all the teachers we've talked with add one highschooler and two middle schoolers.

Ariea"so you really do, like she registrar...both at frederick douglass high school.

Casey"i miss the kids i miss seeing them so much.

And that is really been kind of the general consensus with all the teachers we've talked with add one highschooler and two middle schoolers.

Ariea"so you really do, like she said, you have skin in the game, not that we had never been there before, because we've always been involved with our students, with our children, not our students, i meant our children, monica:they are your students now.haha yeah true, so, you know, actually been a part of that, you know, i think there's gonna be a lot of good memories come out of this for them."

More rural districts have used n-t-i...non traditional instruction often...for years...but in fayette county...where snow days aren't as frequent...this is the first time public schools have turned to n-t-i for instruction...somet hing the kings say is fitting for a non- traditional time.

"nti is a very necessary and important way to continue, education, the best way possible.

"casey:initially confusing.

Now, not, not at all.

And like i said there were a lot of a lot of kinks worked out that first week."

Understandably, that means mom and dad have to help out...especially when it comes to math.

"mix of both: yes, yes.

Lots of it!

Yeah, on three different grade levels yeah that's been interesting."

But on the bright side, their desk by day, doubles as the game table by night.

Casey "as far as just chaos and keeping up with three kids- kind of slow things down for us, which is great.

And, you know we have time now to do things like play monopoly."

So what's it like for 11-year-old vada, to spend more time with her parents?

"vada: ugh i annoy them a lot.

Dad: her words!

Casey: but what do you think about it though?

Vada: i really like it, i really like spending time with my family."

The feeling isn't quite mutual for her older brother and sister " it's okay."

On a serious note, vada says she misses seeing her friends and online learning has its flaws.

Vada: "like sometimes it's hard to have a clear understanding of what the teacher wants us to do."

Yet she's trying to find the silver lining.

"like my dad said we're getting an experience of what college is like."

School's out the rest of this academic year...and a lot of parents don't know if the 2020-2021 school year will be more of this or back to in-person classes.

"airea: i don't make predictions, i am hoping we get back to doing education, the way we know education to be," until then, the kings, will follow the recommended steps, even if it means "stop, hammer time."
