Staying Healthy in Quarentine
Staying Healthy in Quarentine

We talk with Amanda Moder from Hyvee about good ways to stay healthy and active while on lockdown.

Outbreak in the country and what is happening locally.

>> thank you.

Madeleine.

Snack and comfort food sales are soaring while people stay home.

Eating all day can be tempting during these unprecedented times.

Kq2's jodie o'brien talked to a dietician on helps how to stop overeating and gaining weight during self quarantine.

>> being quarantined and being healthy are not synonymous, joining us today is dietician from hy-vee, amanda motor.

Welcome.

>> thank you.

Hi jody.

Thanks jodie.

Thanks so much for having me.

>> tell us, what can we do to remain healthy and quarantine.

It's impossible.

Am i right?

>> such a great question and something that a lot of us are asking right now.

One of my biggest recommendations is focus on including fruits and vegetables.

We know we need balance across all the foods we eat.

I think it's during this time, the fruits and vegetables can be a huge challenge.

A reminder everybody is doing best they can.

Eat what is reasonable for you.

I have a few examples of ways we can incorporate variety and kind of extend the shelf life or freezer life or fridge life on the fruits and veggies.

>> because we don't always want to keep running back and forth to the grocery store.

We want to make sure we have things in our cabinet and freezer we can pull out and make a healthy shake or meal.

I see you have lots of stuff there.

>> absolutely.

So one example is baby spinach, something we can put in a smoothie or mix into eggs.

Don't forget breakfast or dinner because we have really easy go to options.

Maybe eggs with spinach and whatever other veggies you have on hand.

Full grain toast.

That's usually a quick, easy one.

We think about our frozen veggies.

Asparagus here or frozen avocado.

One of my favorites are frozen cherries in smoothies.

If you are really limited on fridge or freezer space and-or if you have little kids.

These probably wouldn't be our first choice but some is better than none.

Some of our shelf-stable squeeze packs.

If you're able to get fresh produce and not able to make multiple trips.

You might think of getting something like a big container of strawberries and putting them in the freezer to keep longer and another option would be our canned fruits or veggies.

Water chestnuts and pineapple.

Those are obviously going to be more shelf stable options too.

>> those are really good.

I love the apple sauce pouchs.

I don't know.

That might be a first step.

Not like a fill in.

>> right.

So how are you personally staying healthy during this quarantine?

Are you getting out and exercising or finding stuff to do on your own there?

>> yeah.

Such a great question.

I'm trying to get outside as i can.

I'm a dancer and turned part of my kitchen into a makeshift dance studio.

Just trying to do the best and remembering, my main motivation is when we're moving our bodies, we feel our best.

A lot of times we turn into a big pressure thing where i have to move my body.

It's more of i'm going to feel better and be my best self when i'm getting out and active as i'm able to.
