Summer sports up in the air in the Golden Triangle

The Restart Columbus Recreation subcommittee is looking for ways boys and girls can play organized baseball and softball this summer despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Wayne hereford reports the group met today to discuss what it will mean when they say "play ball".

Standup.."the city of columbus, lowndes county , new hope , and caledonia have all joined together to comeup with a plan they call "back to the ballpark".

Its recommendation s for kids who want to play baseball this summer inspite of the covid-19 pandemic" natsot--"dizzie dean and other licensing groups they're trying to formulate some guidelines as well... committee members met at city hall to discuss a long list of recommendation s that would have to be met in order for the kids to play baseball.

As with everything else these days, its all about the coronavirus.

"the purpose of the meeting today was to discuss league ball, when will practice begin , when will the league begin, and when the league will end."

Mayor robert smith says the tentative plan would would allow practice for league play to start june first.

League play will start june 15th and the season would end a month later.

But he says this is a tentative plan adding that if for some reason the league does not start on june fifteenth the season will be canceled.

Meanwhile, travel teams can start practice next tuesday on city and county ball parks.

The mayor says the plans are contingent on what meet's state guidelines.

If they play, there will be lots of rules to avoid the corovavirus such as wiping down equipment between plays and maintaining social distancing.

(roger short-lowndes county recreation manager) "yeah i think its feasible.

Its like i said during the meeting, you're always going to have that dugout mom, that dugout dad being in there getting those kids in and out of the dugout making sure they've got that helmet on making sure they got their bat .that kind of thing.

We're going to put a lot of that on those parents."
