Garage sales put on hold

Season.

It's something many people look forward to.

But- it's another thing the coronavirus has put on hold.

News channel 2's caitlin irla reports.

Across new york state, garage sales have been put on hold due to the coronavirus.

None "garage sales are not allowed, not essential right now, at least not in phase one or even phase 2 been on the states radar but not right now."

Though they are not essential, they are something many people anticipate and enjoy... "when you think about the summer time, besides going to the adirondacks or going to the beaches and your boat, garage sales are probably on the top 5 list of things people do in the summer time and look forward to."

Megan lennon says she has always loved garage sales.

Even though there are alternatives like online sites... lennon says of course it's more fun in person.

"i just enjoy the community part of it, sometimes you get to talk to people, meet them and see what they're up to or what joy you had in your treasures now they're going to take home.

College students who are trying to fill that first apartment might be looking for stuff as well so it's always fun to see why they're purchasing some things."

And it's not just oneida county... herkimer county administator, jim wallace, says he has recieved several calls regarding garage sales.

"at this time there's absolutely nothing from the governors office that allows garage sales to move forward."

He says everyday he speaks with the governor's staff and that is a topic that comes up often.

"the answer would be no you cannot do that, check back with us in a day or two to see if anything's changed."

And when yard sales are allowed, megan believes there is a way to do it safely.

"we have a pretty decent size yard and driveway so i think we could spread it out enough.

It's a personal choice, if you come or not, we certainly would do what we could, hand sanitizer, protections i mean i want to protect my home and my family but i certainly want to get rid of the stuff i've been holding on to."
