Enforcement around the state want stronger laws to allow them to do their jobs.

And they decided to make it easy on lawmakers....by drafting 10 proposals of their own, so all they need is for the state legislature to pass it.

What do they seek?

And will their proposals become law?

Newschannel 2's joleen ferris reports.

Standup .

None "it's an ambitious package of 10 proposals the sheriffs are floating, hoping it doesn't sink once it reaches the legislature" this press conference, at the oneida county sheriff's department, was one of five taking place simultaneously around upstate new york this morning, advancing 10 proposals the sheriffs and police chiefs present would like to see become law 22:17:16 like any other career, we are not perfect.

Police officers make mistakes.

Police officers need to be held accountable when they make mistakes, but at the same time, we've got to be given the tools to do our job and we can't have our hands tied" 22:17:32 among the proposals the unveiled today: making resisting arrest an e felony.

Right now, it only warrants an appearance ticket.

Making any crime against a police officer that's committed because of their status as an officer, a hate crime.

Making it a class d felony to falsely accuse a police officer.

And- making failure to retreat a crime....a d felony for any person to approach or remain within 25 feet of an officer trying to perform their duties, when the officer tells them to retreat 22:07:02 "there is a time and place to question an officer's action, but not in the middle of the street, when the officer is under pressure of trying to bring a situation under control for the safety of the public" they need the entire state legislature to pass this, but haven't spoken to them about it, yet.

We did.

1:49:20 "i believe that we need to respect and work with law enforcement however, realistically, senator griffo doesn't necessarily see this happening any time soon.

1:49:45 "the likelihood of what will happen, you're under one party control in this state, one region domination.

I don't see coming back into session where this will be a priority for the majority, but i can't speak for them, also" this wasn't a revelation to oneida couny sheriff, robert maciol.

But he's counting on more than just the state legislature.

22:23:58 "it will be an uphill battle, i'm not gonna kid you there.

But at the same time, if the public suppports us and they relay that support of these issues to their elected officials, that will help us, we hope" jf, nc2 > traffic alert starting tomorrow and friday....
