Safety Concerns In the Heat

WAAY 31 meteorologist Carson Meredith provides some insight on just how fast your parked car can reach deadly levels of heat this summer.

As the summer heat continues across north alabama, the risk of leaving unattended children and pets in a hot car is on the rise.

Waay 31 meteorologist carson meredith explains just how fast a hot car can reach deadly levels of heat during the summer months and simple steps you can take to keep your family safe.

Summer is in full swing in north alabama and now is an important time to remember how dangerous and potentially deadly a hot car can be this time of year.

Let's take a look at how dangerously hot a parked car can become when the outside air temperature is 90 degrees.

Inside the car, the temperature will climb to 109 degrees in just 10 minutes!

After 20 minutes, the temperature rises to 119 degrees, then to 124 degrees after 30 minutes.

Within one hour, the interior of a car will be 133 degrees.

Keep in mind that north alabama is expecting actual air temperatures in the mid 90s and heat index values near 105 degrees over the next several days, meaning our cars will heat up to much more deadly temperatures in much faster time compared to the numbers we have listed here.

This is why it is so critical to always lock your cars, even when it is parked in your driveway, as kids could easily wander into an unlocked hot car.

And be sure to check the back seat before you leave your vehicle not only for young children, but for your pets as well.
