Local NAACP chapter calls for quality education for all in return to school

This is part of a national effort in which chapters across the nation are writing in to their local governments.

The upcoming school year tomorrow... and tonight, the head of the naacp in eugene springfield... is asking the governor to hold off on reopening schools.

We kick off our team coverage with kezi 9 news reporter kennedy dendy live in eugene.

Eric richardson.... executive director of the eugene naacp... says problem with online learning is that african americans are disproportionately affected by covid 19.

He says the schools shouldn't reopen until all c- d-c protections have been put in place.

But if the schools do reopen...richardson says african american families must have access to the proper technology and equipment.

That way if they don't feel comfortable sending their kids back to the classroom... the children will still get a good education.

"i think that by, by, this increasing education.

It will increase understanding and cooperation between people so quality education also is about what kind of people.

We're bringing up what kind of neighbors what kind of, you know, brothers and sisters, we are bringing up who who really value community and value.

Self help and helping others."

Richardson says that a recent naacp poll shows that out of a sample of african americans, 80 percent preferred to*hold off on ending the shutdown to ensure safety.

He says he would like to state to assess equal funding and resources in public schools so*all students have a chance to thrive.
