Kentucky and Indiana are taking two approaches toward mail-in ballots.

That coupled with -- the risk of getting covid-19 --- brushing up against your right to vote.

Lawmakers are turning to the mail-box --- so your voice is heard ---*in what some are calling - the most important election of our generation.

Tonight - 44news reporter valerie lyons --- details everything you need to know*if your casting your ballot from the couch.

Changes to the united states postal service on hold until after the november 3rd elections--- are easing some of the concerns surrounding mail-in voting.

However --with record numbers expected -- the earlier you request and send in your vote -- the better.

In kentucky, the online portal to request a ballot opens on friday-- and--just as in the primary-- health risks are a valid reason to vote by mail.

While kentucky voters can use covid-19 as a reason to request mail-in ballots, that isn 't the case here in indiana.

But the posey county clerk says she doesn't think that will affect voter turnout.

"most voters want to vote no matter how they can vote, and they're going to take any precautions that they feel comfortable with doing.

I think we will have an increased absentee by mail than normal, but i don't think that it will be at the level that we had in the primary."

To qualify-- voters will need to list an excuse--other than covid-19-- including job, disability or illness--to qualify for a mail-in ballots.

Applications are now open in indiana and can be downloaded online--or-- requested through a local county clerk's office.

The deadline to request ballots in both kentucky and indiana -- is late october.
