At Tuesday night's virtual common council meeting, Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig says the city caught the spread at the right time, and only one non-college student has tested positive.

Outbreak at well over 200.... tonight the oneonta common council held their regularly scheduled meeting...but there was nothing regular about over 200 covid 19 cases in their community.

In response to the outbreak at suny oneonta, mayor gary herzig says he expects thenumbeo rise, as they are waiting forthk from all suny oneonta students who are being tested.

Herzig says as of this afternoon.... 245 students have tested positive for covid-19.

The ny state health department has assigned 71 contact tracers and 7 investigators to oneonta to help pinpoint and map the spread, to stop it as soon as possible.

Three testing sites will open in oneonta including the first one tommorow at 11:00 am.

The sites will operate through saturday.

Herzig says by taking these steps now, he believes the city caught the outbreak from spreading to the general population.

"we do not have reason to believe at this time that transmission has moved from the college community students to the general population.

We have not had people stating that they have symptoms, we have only had one positive test of anyone not related with the college in the past week.

So, all under cautions are good that we caught this in time and it's not transmitted to the general population.

Suny oneonta students who live on campus are not only not allowed to leave campus, they are not allowed to leave their dorm rooms and their meals are being delivered to them.

The city is doing what they can, including getting more testing available for residents, in the event people can't get into the first three sites this week.
