Winona State University issues campus-wide quarantine

The university announced it will be limiting all non-essential activities the next two weeks in hopes of slowing the spread of Covid-19 on its main campus.

Katie... george... officials say they're not only seeing an increase in transmissions within the winona state community... but also the entire town of winona.

So while it's the university that will be quarantining over the next two weeks... it's really the entire area that is being affected.

Olson says the school has a responsibility to respond to the rise in cases.

"*u student vincent divito says he recently tested positive for coronavirus after... coming in contact with another student who was infected.

"i thought i was going to be fine because i didn't get too close to him... but then i got tested because i work in winona too, so it was mandatory.

But then i got tested and i became positive."

"* u has be taking steps to reduce the risk of coronavirus infections since the start of the semester... but ultimately... safety measures can only go so far.

"they're doing everything they can... but there's also the stuff they can't stop... like the off?

"* campus activities students do."

And as for the risk posed to winona residents outside of the university.... divito says there's little doubt the virus is spreading.

"a lot of students here, you know, they have jobs where they work like downtown, or they work around town, and what vincent just said there underscores just how hard it is for universities across the country to manage coronavirus on campuses.

Students are notoriously social... and despite precautions winona state was taking from the start of the semester... there was ultimately little they could do to prevent the situation they find themselves in.
