FNF Scouting Report: West Point

The West Point Green Wave football team is seeking its 5th straight 5A state championship.

However, they lost the opener.

They look to get back on track this week against Tupelo in the FNF Game of the Week.

Most successful football program in the state of mississippi.

The west point green wave entered the 2020 football season seeking its 5th straight 5a state championship, but 2020 did not start the way they hoped.

Matt st.

Jean joins us in the studio with the scouting report.

Last year's west point senior class won a state title every last year's west point senior class won a state title every single year they went to high school.

And it now falls on this year's seniors to carry on the tradition.

Coronavirus almost broke the streak because of something completely out of their control.

(jaquarius thomas) it was scary because without football i don't know what i'd do if they took the season away from us i'd be hurting.

(track) jaquarius thomas is a senior defensive end for the green wave.

He has eyes on playing at the next level he is hoping top division one programs like ole miss, mississippi state, and tennessee will recruit him.

But first things first and that's enjoying getting one more year with his teammates.

(jaquarius) i don't really focus on that.

I just focus on helping my team out.

(track) and just that summer of uncertainty made actually playing this past friday that much sweeter for senior trey ryland.

(trey) it felt like a joy, i loved it.

Just playing with my guys.

One more year with them.

(track) and when you play at west point.

State championships are the expectation.

They hit a road block last friday when they lost 40 to 28 against starkville last friday.

But the loss isn't stopping the drive for five.

(trey) it makes us want to do better to get it again this year and next year too for the other guys.

(track) that's the culture head coach chris chambliss has built.

It's not about the individual.

It's about the glory of representing your community and bringing pride to the fans and alumni.

Friday's loss fueled the fire.

(chris) our guys, uh, with their backs up against the wall we want to feel that pressure, you know the pressure to win each and every week, you know, our guys give us great effort every day and they're going to continue to do that.

In the battle of the waves, one team will leave the blue turf of tupelo tomorrow night with a win, the other in an 0-2 hole.

We'll be live from there tomorrow night as we get ready for another edition of friday night fever.

S ince it is the game of the week, that means we have the game beyond the game.

The cheer team of the week.

That contest is now live on our instagram, hop on over and cast your vote for either west point or tupelo.
