A shelter for homeless men in van wert is looking for grants to help their new building get up and running.haven of hope is set to open its doors in october.it'll be the only one of its kind in the county.fox 55's chris mullooly is live in van wert.chris... how have the last few months affected their opening??hunter..
They say construction inside had to be pushed back during march and april.but as you can see the outside is ready..
The inside only needs a few touch ups.and they'll be able to fit 10 men in here... in order for them to have a place to stay.
Organizers of haven of hope will tell you...it wasn't easy to get to where they are.
Council met and three of the members agreed with us the other four did notafter months of planning..
Legal battles and construction.andy mcmahon, the executive the director of haven for hope says he's ready to see the building house those in need."we ran into challenges but we were faithful and went ahead"the shelter finally got the council's blessing..to have a shelter for men in van wert... the first in the county.and an area where washing clothes..
A good shower and a roof over their heads can be a luxury.
Basically the city agreed we can operate a mens shleter here the overnight stay fits ten... the group was housing those who were homeless in a nearby hotel..
But funds ran dry...we house 24 pepole some for a couple days others for several weekswhich is why they've been fighting for donations and grant moneywe've been usinga lot of local funding from indvs and businesses to get this up and openingand say they've got a grant they're working to secure that would help pay bills for months... and if they don't get it... would put them behind the eight ball.this would put us at least a month behind we want to get open now we were only able to help people with hotels through august so we haven't been able to for about a month and a half the grant mentioned is a state farm grant.the group has to place within the top 40 of 200 to receive 25 thousand dollars.
