"federal" coffee in downtown terre haute is starting a new chapter during the pandemic.

The new business offically opened its doors on tuesday.

And as news 10's jordan kudisch explains..

They're hoping to bring a different flavor to the area.

Jon, alia..

A cup of coffee can really set the mood for the day..

And at "federal" coffee shop... you're sure to leave with a smile on your face.

I sat down with the co-owner... and he says that's exactly what he was aiming for.

*nat sound of grinding coffee* coffee beans from kansas city..

Bakery items with a swedish twist..

And a touch of "terre haute" flare.... step inside "federal coffee and fine foods"..

K}:"it's bustling and it's busy."

J}: co-owner "kris kraut" says... people are lining up for a taste of something new.

K}: "im swedish and so i took some scandinavian style and applied that to the interior" j}: it's a small touch to a building that already holds so much natural beauty.

K}: "the beautiful tin ceiling and vintage tile floor were already there, so it's really been easy because the building has natural charmisa."

J}: you'll come for the historic structure..

But stay for the espresso.

K} "try an americano, try out espresso pretty clean or our lattes are great we do our own pumpkin spice latte."

J}: despite the hardships other businesses may be facing to keep their doors open.

Federal coffee decided the time was "now" to make their debut.

K}: "we really felt like it was the right time to either pivot or stand still and i knew if i didn't pivot our small business which is a catering conpany, i knew that we would have to close."

J}: and one good cup of joe at a time... "kraut" says they're bringing a sip of happiness to uncertain times.

K}: "this warmth and familiarity i think is really important right now when everything else seems to be a little crazy.

So i think it's nice to have a really good, predictable cup of coffee at federal."

You can find the new shop right on the corner of wabash avenue..

And in the next 30 minutes i'll tell you how it got it's name..

And the best drinks to try.

Back next fall.

A new coffee spot... is getting some attention... in downtown terre haute.

"federal coffee and fine foods" officially opend its doors on opend its doors on tuesday.

And as news 10's jordan kudisch explains..

Even amid the pandemic..

They're seeing quite the crowd.

That's right alia..

I was there yesterday morning as those doors opened..

And within 20 minutes there was a line out the door.

While people come for the espresso... there's much more this new spot offers.

The building itself... holds years of history.

I sat down with the co-owner "kris"..

He told me they tried to preserve the original architecture because of the history.

The shop offers fresh ground coffee..

That comes from missouri..

And the sweet treats behind the counter..

Are inspired by the owner's swedish background.

And if you're on the go..

They're the "only" coffee shop downtown that offers a "walk-up" to-go window!

The drink menu offers a variety of drinks from... espressos..

To lattes..

To even non-coffee drinks like the "federal fizz."

The co-owner says he's fortunate to open..

Even with osbtacles from covid-19.

"i can see down the block that there's still growth and change and so that makes me feel really reassured that we made the right decision, other people are also thinking that this is a great time to really improve downtown so i want to continue to see that happen and continue to be a really good partner with downtown and the terre haute community.

" the shop is open until 8 tonight.
