Skilled to Work: Paralegal technology program at NEMCC

WTVA reporter Sydney Darden learned more about the paralegal technology program at NEMCC.

A new career path that will better you life and inspire others to do the same.... in this week's segment wtva's sydney darden spoke with one teacher at northeast mississippi community college that did just that with the help of the school's paraegal technology program.... nat - "the is is the daily journal is may of 1994 for mother's day" professor janelle lowery looking back on decades of hard work that started at north east mississippi.

Nat we were all mothers.

Either married with children or single with children."

Once a ninth grade drop out, an ambitious lowery soon got her g-e-d and enrolled in the school's paralegal technology program.

Sot-janelle lowery, program instructor- "shaking so bad, i didn't know if i could climb the staircase to get into that first class.

So i think overcoming that fear of failure was the biggest hurdle for me."

A hurrdle lowery passed with flying colors.

Eventually graduating with honors and earning a law degree.

After a successful career as a lawyer she decided to step back into the classroom to help ohters do the same.

Sot- "i thought it would be a good idea to come back and contribute to what i had benefitted from" lowery says once enrolled ---students learn all the in's an out's of the lhe law and operating in an attorney's office.

Sot- "we cover family law, civil litigation 1 and 2.

We cover real property where they learn to draw up deeds."

Despite not being able to give legal advice and appear in court, paralegals play a huge role in the justice system.

Sot - "they draft paperwork.

They can appear in court with their attorney."

They interview clients."

Although rigorous, lowery says once out of the two semester program students are launched into a growing industry.

Sot- "it's relevant more and more everyday" but the hardest part lowery says is taking the first step.

Sot- "i'm not going to tell you it will just be easy.

You will have some fear but you can do it."
