As many people in the United States continue to find themselves stuck at home, alcohol sales have unsurprisingly seen a drastic increase.

Online alcohol orders rose a whopping 243 percent in the week ending March 21, compared to the same period last year.

According to a study conducted by researchers at Kings College London, you may want to consider choosing red wine as your lockdown drink of choice.

The study found that in a group of 916 women, those who drank red wine displayed a more diverse gut microbiome (GM).

Moderate red wine consumption is associated with greater diversity and a healthier gut microbiota that partly explain its long debated beneficial effects on health, Dr. Caroline Le Roy, via ‘Women’s Health’.

The GM plays a significant role in a person’s body, as its health directly plays a role in the effectiveness of the immune system and vice versa.

However, lead author Dr. Caroline Le Roy stressed that “moderation” is key, as an infrequent glass was found to still provide the same health benefits.
