Libya Floods: Storm Daniel annihilates 25% of Derna city; 10,000 reported to be missing

The Mediterranean storm Daniel that wreaked havoc in Libya, causing catastrophic floods, has claimed the lives of over 2,300 people and left more than 10,000 missing.

Emergency workers fear that the death toll could surpass 5,000 very soon after floodwaters smashed through dams and washed away entire neighborhoods of the city.

The eastern city of Derna has been hit hardest, with officials stating that as much as a quarter of the city has been wiped out.

The destruction came to Derna and other parts of eastern Libya on Sunday night.

As the storm pounded the coast, Derna residents said they heard loud explosions and realized that dams outside the city had collapsed.

Flash floods were unleashed down Wadi Derna, a river running from the mountains through the city and into the sea.
