Back to School plan in Vigo County

For many families..

There are concerns about sending students and staff back to the traditional classroom.

Today the vigo county school corporation announced an updated re-opening plan.

At 5 o'clock...news 10's dominic miranda highlighted those major changes.

The changes include a hybrid option for elementary school students..

Middle and high school students will have in-school instruction 4 day weeks....with a fifth day of "remote" learning.

The district hopes it'll cater to parents who are hesitant to send their children back to school this fall.

Now...dominic miranda joins us with one of those parent's reaction to the new options.

I spoke with a parent of 3 vigo county children who shared her reaction about the changes.

Crystal hunter has a 5th grader, a 1st grader, and a kindergartner enrolled in vigo county schools this fall.

She says many of her family are at a high risk to get the virus.

So... she' paying close attention to the schools decision.

"i knew the option to actualy go in-person wasn't a good fit for us personally, but also knew i didn't really like the virtual option because children need hands-on learning, they need to experience things instead of just sitting in front of the computer."

Bill riley and the vigo county school corporation agreed.

They say they asked parents..

And listened to the feed back.

One of the biggest changes includes the best of both worlds for elementary students.

"well...can we offer some sort of hybrid option--middle of the road option--that allows parents to keep what they love about their schools, the contact with the staff, the vcsc curriculum, but it allows my child to stay home and we were able to feasibly work out the details for that at the elementary level and so we are happy to offer it."

This was music to hunter's ears.

She now feels confident with this plan for her children this fall.

"when they came out with the hybrid option today, as a parent, i loved that option because we can still be involved with our school which we love and have become a family with them.

But also, to keep our children safe as well as our other high risk family members."

Masks will be required for all students and teachers district wide.

Riley says they are in contact with the vigo county health department daily... and this plan is fluid.
